|  ECOGRAM  |  PAPERS  is a serial publication that uses the Ecogram events as its core, selects and expands in material, contributors and resources, in order to provide a comprehensive map or sourcebook, a literal eco-gram of a particular theme or geographical region.

Using essays, interviews, innovative design projects, transcripts of selected conference papers and discussions, Ecogram Papers looks to provide a new approach to the issues that sustainability raises, that is open-ended, innovative, collaborative, and optimistic. To this end, it will present a wide range of topics in a language accessible to the non-specialists as well as to scholars and design practitioners.

The Ecogram events have so far drawn a diverse crowd of scholars and students from the fields of architecture, urban design, urban planning, economics, sociology, environmental studies, anthropology, history, art history, as well as design practitioners.

GENERATIVE

Ecogram Papers sets the stage for discussion by constructing a conceptual framework for asking questions, and inviting all kinds of “experts” from the academic and professional worlds to participate in collectively discovering responses.

PROVOCATIVE

Sustainability can take many forms. Ecogram doesn't immediately concede primacy to technology nor to design. Nor are the architect-as-hero or even designer-as-hero paradigms useful here either. The ability to scale a solution may be an impediment to that solution's effectiveness for specific, local cultures—we are interested in asking, how are people getting things done?

AGILE

by being free of a defined 'school' or ideological/academic framework, both the conferences and the proposed publication, Ecogram Papers, can engage phenomena and trends that are much more contemporaneous, and embrace stakeholders and participants who may be doing fascinating work but nevertheless remain outside the well-trodden axes of architecture, design and development.

INCOMPLETE

Ecogram Papers does not pretend to provide a complete picture of what is going on, nor does it pretend to infer definitive patterns from the material it engages. It can point to progress as well as setbacks; fractures and fragments of existing and future discourses and problem spaces.
